Emmerdale

My wife likes to watch Emmerdale on the television and from time to time, when I am not working late, I will sometimes see programmes like Emmerdale on the television.

I watched Emmerdale last night and got rather angry. I am not a good person to sit with when there is some kind of legal drama on the television as I shout out when they have got something wrong.

Last night I chuckled when I saw the Clerk of the Crown Court was wearing a wig like a barrister. Then I chuckled when I saw that the Prosecution barrister was wearing a solicitors robe and not one for Counsel. I then started shouting about the procedures and how the jury had not been sworn. I got angry when the rules of evidence were completely ignored.

My wife does not like watching legal dramas with me. She tells me to, "Be quiet," or from time to time after an outburst I get, "Oh, shut up!"

The Bill is one of the worst culprits for getting it wrong. I cannot recall ever seeing an episode where a defence solicitor was portrayed in a positive light.

The Bill was fairly accurate in a portayal of Police life in its very early and fairly gitty realism days. But its shite now !

Yes but you said something about The Bill always getting it wrong...?

I've given up getting all exercised when TV progs misrepresent the Probation Service. Though I did have a good chuckle at Eastenders recently over the remarkably lax prison visiting arrangements for Johnny Allen (facing multiple murder charges, remember) in what appeared to be a school gymnasium, on several consecutive days...

Very sarcastic, I chuckled out loud at this comment.

God. Life in the bil would be so easy. No paperwork. Don't seal tapes in interview just switch on/off. Ignore PACE. Solve cases in a day. Bingo.

Yes but look at the crime rate! Sun Hill puts South Central LA to shame.

[pedant alert]

1) The Clerk of the Court wears a Barrister's wig at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) or at any other Court when it sits as the CCC

2) Are you sure that the Prosecutor's gown wasn't a Silks gown? From behind, they look like a Solicitors gown (rectangular flap rather than the pleated semi-circle)?

[pedantry alert off]

As for the Bill, I suspect those fiends at Barton Street push their crime into the Sun Hill area thus conflating their crime stats....

I agree Outlaws was great, it was just the right side of being a send up. The DJ court scenes were very amusing.

Will they ever make another series?

Apparently another series is going to be made.

You mean you’re not really like that?

I do know what you man though, how many people think all PCSOs are terrorists hell bent on blowing up their own Police Stations (a previous Bill story line)

Yep, the defence lawyers always seem to look a little shady, their clients tend to ignore their whispered advice, the police dread the call out to a lawyer occuring, and the lawyer often shoots more poisoned looks to their client than the pols.

maybe not positive, but pseudo realistic, at least as far as the increasingly soaped up plotlines allow...

(can't use my blogger name (pleader) as am on beta blogger)

The police say The Bill gets them wrong as well, it is just a soap now, if it ever was something else.

My dad is the same with airplane movies, & tv shows with airplanes.

But, don't you know on the Bill as it has already been said they are on another world.

Heck, if my shifts were always dayshifts, meaningful chats over a long lunch break, no paperwork(!) an opportunity to shag your colleagues if you stay there long enough and all go out and get leathered down the pub, then I am submitting my Force and Station move request straight away.

Ah, the joy of TV :)

My boyfriend has a habit of shouting "No Comment" at the screen during the interview room scenes.

Ca you imagine a police drama where noone confessess and everyone walks. How dull would that be?

I agree Outlaws was good. It used to remind me of Moss and Co's offices in Clapton. Is it really coming back? That would be brilliant

The current story line in "Emmerdale" repeatedly shows an actor playing the role of a Solicitor appearing in Court dressed as a Barrister with wig and rectangular-back gown. If he is a Solicitor-Advocate, is this correct?
